Patty
Schlafer has been teaching middle level music in Wisconsin’s private and public
schools for over forty years.  Ms. Schlafer’s interests are varied and led
to an active professional life as both teacher and performer. A 1981 UW-Madison graduate, her formative years
of teaching began in the Madison Area Catholic Band Program and under the
mentorship of Jan Tweed for the Waunakee Summer Band Program.  She
taught music at Mount Horeb Middle School and was a member of a collaborative team of music teachers there
beginning in 1989.  She retired from full time teaching in 2018. Ms.
Schlafer has a master’s degree in Curriculum Theory and Design where her
research included a study of musical tastes of the adolescent band
student.    



She has been guest conductor and horn instructor at numerous
summer music camps and festivals including UW Whitewater, Madison, Milwaukee,
Platteville, and Stevens Point. She also has served as a clinician for the
Beyond the Notes Music Festival at the Kalahari.  



Ms. Schlafer works with teachers from the state of Wisconsin to
implement the Comprehensive Musicianship Project for students of music. She is
currently serving as chair of the WI CMP Committee. Special interests within CMP

 include: Differentiation
in a music classroom and Inclusion of pop music in a band classroom and
the connection to student culture.



As a horn player, she is a retired member of the Madison Symphony
Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and Artemis Horn Quartet. She currently
performs with the Madison Wind Ensemble.   Ms. Schlafer loves community
theater and has served as the music director for the Verona Area Community
Theater’s productions of 42nd
Street, Guys and Dolls, Mamma Mia and White Christmas. She is currently in
production for the musical Matilda. 



She is currently enjoying an active retiree’s life of guest
conducting, leading CMP workshops, and working retail at Isaac’s Antiques in
Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, the troll capital of the world. It’s a great day trip,
